Selecting the right gemstone for your dream ring.

Historically diamonds have always been associated with prestige, beauty and love. Their famous ad campaign ‘Diamonds are forever’ struck a cord with consumers making those precious mineral stones the most sought after luxury commodity.

We can see why, their beauty, scintillation and strength are truly one of a kind. Diamonds are the hardest natural mineral which makes a suitable option for an engagement ring. Even so, diamonds can still be prone to chipping or fractures. It’s important to carefully view and inspect your diamonds before purchase and make sure they carry a supported GIA diamond certificate (from sizes 0.20ct upwards). This report will detail the colour, cut, clarity and carat weight (4c’s) and any possible inclusions which may affect the longevity of the diamond.

Coloured gemstones, although not as hard as diamonds, with proper care can still be an option for a gemstone engagement ring and a piece to wear and pass down for many generations. We would always suggest matching a gemstone with your lifestyle. If you have active lifestyle you may want to consider a gemstone from the Corundum species, Sapphire or Ruby. They are durable gemstones and there are many varieties of colours and fabulous unique shapes to choose from.

Coloured gemstones don’t have a structured grading system like the 4C’s of a Diamond. The eye is most often drawn to the gemstone’s colour which tops the list of factors that creates a gems unique beauty. Most coloured gemstones have been heat treated to enhance both colour and sometimes minimize the inclusions, this is a common practice in the gem trade and we always recommend purchasing from trusted sources who disclose treatments and explain how to best take care of your gem.

The design of your ring plays an important role when selecting your gemstone. The gemstone’s size and shape generally guides the overall proportions however there are certain design guides to ensure your ring structure wears well and protects your gemstones. For clients who have an active lifestyle, we sometimes suggest teaming your coloured gemstone with an outer halo of diamonds which can both support and contrast your wonderful gemstone.
